Rules used for mundan

Times are for Chennai (India time). A Hindu day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so a time before sunrise belongs to the day before. Muhurtham is calculated from classical Jyotish rules using precise planetary positions for your city. Regional traditions vary, so please confirm with your family priest.

Questions

Is the date list enough to fix the muhurtham?

The list gives the good days for everyone in Chennai. The exact muhurtham also depends on the lagna at that minute and on the Tara bala and Chandra bala of the child. The personal muhurtham checks all of these and gives the best minute of each date.

What do Uttama and Madhyama mean?

Uttama means every rule is met. Madhyama means the time is acceptable but one item is not the best, for example a Saturday, or a Krishna Shashthi to Dashami tithi. The reason is shown under the time.

Why do other calendars show different dates?

Published lists often differ from each other. Some count Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi), Bhadra karana or the days around an eclipse, which Muhurta Chintamani avoids. Others follow a different regional custom for the months. We do not relax a rule to add dates: every listed time passes every rule for mundan.
